Dear Parents, Students, and Guardians:
Our staff at Declo High School would like to thank the parents who were able to attend parent teachers conference. I would especially like to thank those who took a minute to attend the first annual State of The School Address. Over the course of the two sessions, Thursday evening and Friday morning, I was asked a few times about intervention.
One of the pieces of the PLC process, our district and school have been working on, is providing time for students to work on things they do not yet know as well as time to work on deeper learning if they do know the material. Research shows, and I believe it is very clear, the best person to help students deepen knowledge of a specific curriculum is the professionally trained educators we have hired to teach our children. With our lengthened day we are able to provide such a time. Each student is assigned a block of time each day where they can work one on one with teachers. If our students utilize this time productively, they should have only larger projects or practice to complete at home. All of our children miss school from time to time. Intervention provides a great opportunity to catch up, make up a test, or even re-take a test if necessary.
A better title for this block of time would be, and in the future will be, academic lab. This is graded time. Please understand that. Each day attendance at intervention is recorded and marked. If your child exceeds four days of absence in intervention their grade will be impacted in every class that day. Remember that a student may only miss four days in any one class before they lose credit. This holds true for intervention as well. Each class has included a lab grade. This lab grade will be assigned at the end of each semester and is 100% determined on your child’s participation/attendance during intervention. For example, if I missed five A-day intervention class periods I will lose 5% of the overall points available in each A-day class. I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion surrounding the purpose and value of this block of time. I welcome any questions you have. Please understand that it is our sincere desire to provide each child with a quality educational experience.
